Herriman UT Still The Team To Beat, But CBA NJ And Niwot CO Are Within Striking Distance After Strong Performances Last Weekend By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor The Mustangs of Herriman are taking care of business one weekend at a time. They dominated at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in Irvine, Calif. Then they went to Idaho and crushed the field at the Bob Firman Invitational with 29 points, as Tayshaun Ogomo and Jackson Spencer went 1-2. On Wednesday this week, Herriman won the Region 2 title and moved a step closer to the Utah state meet. Christian Brothers NJ and Niwot CO both logged impressive results last weekend and have every reason to believe in their national championship dreams. The Colts of Lincroft, N.J., who recently celebrated another milestone in their dual meet winning streak when they won for the 400th straight time in a span lasting 50 years. At last weekend's Bowdoin Park Classic, senior Joe Barrett and his teammates ran the fastest collective team time ever on one of the Northeast's most important courses. Barrett's 15:25 had a lot to do with the bringing the average down, but CBA's pack is a strong and deep as ever. Niwot of Boulder, Colo. went to the Desert Twilight and ran under the lights and in the Arizona heat for an impressive performance that showcased the group's depth. Rocco Culpepper led the Cougars by running 14:44.3 for second place to Rio Rancho NM's Charlie Vause. Southlake Carroll TX and Crater OR round out the top five, based primarily on their strong performances at Woodbridge. Those teams finished second and third behind Herriman in the boys sweepstakes race and they were separated by just 14 points. Another team taking a big lead up the rankings was Jesuit of New Orleans, which traveled to the Wingfoot XC Classic in Georgia and won big. The top five all ran within a minute of Brady Mullen's 15:09.4 for fourth place. There are four Jesuits in the top 20. The Jesuit from Carmichael, Calif. won the Nike Portland XC title and looks like it could be the best team in California so far. The Marauders are No. 13. Jesuit of Portland finished third at The Mook at Alderbrook, but was without top runner Matthew Wroblewski. He ran by himself last weekend at Nike Portland XC and showed his fitness. The No. 17 Crusaders are getting set for two trips to Washington state to compete in the Nike Twilight Invitational in Marysville, Wash., and then Hole In The Wall as week later. Belen Jesuit of Miami, at No. 7, will get a test at Great American this weekend in North Carolina, taking on Ridgefield CT, Trinity (Louisville) KY, Huntsville AL and Marist GA. Eleven teams in this week's top 30 come from the Southwest region, with five teams from Utah, four from Colorado and one apiece from Arizona and New Mexico. The Top 30 More news |
