Bethlehem Central Moves To Top Spot With Sensational Performance At Suburban Council Championship; Colorado State Looms Saturday

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Mountain Vista CO has been the Nike Cross Nationals favorite all season long and the best of this team could be on display Saturday at the Norris Penrose Event Center, site of the Colorado state meet.

But right now, the most complete performance by a girls team in the country appears to be the Suburban Council Championship performance by Bethlehem Central at Saratoga Park in New York last Saturday.

Charlotte O'Meara, Sophia Chromczak, Anna Chrapowitzky, Logan Kuhn and Katherine Bannigan finished second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth and were separated by 15 seconds. That's an even tighter spread than the 22-second window that saw all five cross the line at the Manhattan Invitational.

New York's history of success on the national stage, and team running this fast, 1-5, is sounding the alarm.

This week's rankings land two days before 24 state meets will be waged from Arizona  to Maine. And Colorado's state meet could be epic, with Mountain Vista, Niwot, Air Academy, Chaparral and Fossil Ridge all testing their abilities in one of the biggest meets of the year.

California teams Buchanan and Trabuco Hills hold the next two spots. Trabuco Hills jumps up into the top five due to its excellent team performance at the Orange County Championships, where the Mustangs scored 32 points and defeated No. 6 J Serra Catholic (80).

Flower Mound has dropped a few spots to No. 5 and will also be in state meet competition on Friday in Round Rock. Adeline Bennett, Alexandra Fox and Ava Cole give this team a Big 3, but Liana Cluley-Garza, who was part of the team's momentous victory at Woodbridge, did not race in the state qualifying meet. Without her, the Jaguars are still the best team in Texas but slip a bit nationally.

Lone Peak of Utah won its fifth state crown in six years with a dominant scored of 29 points, led by Maya Bybee and Zoey Nilsson finishing second and third in Wednesday's 6A final. The five scorers had a 50-second spread and finished in the top 11 of the race.

Also in action this weekend at state meets are Romeo in Michigan, Cardinal Gibbons in North Carolina and Rocky Mountain in Idaho.
