National High School Boys Team Rankings - 11/28Published by
Herriman, CBA Both Great In NXR Wins, Final Clash Could Be Very Close By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Saturday's NXR meets in the Southwest and Northeast confirmed what's been brewing for the past couple of months: Defending champion Herriman of Utah may still be the favorite, but Christian Brothers of New Jersey has what it takes to win the title as well. Jackson Spencer, Tayshaun Ogomo and Jonah and Micah Tang led Herriman through the gauntlet in the Southwest and defeated No. 3 Niwot CO 74-90 in the best matchup of boys cross country teams in the nation so far this year. American Fork, led by low stick Kaden Evans, who might win NXN, is the third-best team in the Southwest and the fourth-best team in the U.S. AF was 30 points behind Niwot, but that's a blank space no other team can fill. No. 2 CBA pulverized the course record at Holmdel Park two weekends in a row at the NJSIAA Groups and Meet of Champions, and then won NXR Northeast with ease, led by Joe Barrett's individual victory. In the Northwest, Coeur d'Alene ID won for the second straight year and performed well enough to make the leap up to No. 5. Twins Maximus and Zackery Cervi-Skinner are the driving force up front, along with one of the country's best No. 3s: Wyatt Carr. Regional champions Southlake Carroll TX, Downers Grove North IL and Belen Jesuit Prep FL, like CDA, all maintained dominance in their regions and will be factors in the chase for the podium at NXN. At the California state championship meet on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno, Beckman of Irvine, Calif. is the favorite to win its first CIF Division 1 cross country title and Jesuit, coached by legendary Walt Lange, is in line to win a record-breaking 10th state championship in the Division 2 final. New to the rankings are NXN qualifiers State College Area PA, which finished second to CBA in the Northeast, and St. Albans of Washington, D.C., which made history by becoming the first team from the District of Columbia to earn a trip to nationals via the Southeast (second to Belen Jesuit).
