Mountain Vista Returns To The Top With Fantastic Team Performance At NXR Southwest By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Mountain Vista of Highlands Ranch, Colo. was No. 1 to begin the season and will go into Nike Cross Nationals ranked No. 1 again. After a stellar performance at NXR Southwest, led by the top-15 finishes of Keeghan Edwards, Claire Guiberson and Juliet Frum, Mountain Vista appears to be ready for its big test in Portland. A team that finished third at nationals last year, lost no seniors, and added Edwards and Brenna Jorde to the lineup, showed at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. that it is the deepest in the country. It will take a great effort to defeat No. 2 Bethlehem of Delmar, N.Y., which cruised through the New York state meet and Federation/NXR New York meet on back to back weekends. A weekend off before shipping to Portland should allow for some needed rest. Trabuco Hills and Buchanan will go head to head on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif. at the CIF Division 1 state finals. Trabuco Hills, led by the 1-2 punch of Holly Barker and Millie Bayles, was exceptional last Saturday at the CIF Southern Section final at Mt. SAC. Buchanan has interchangeable parts and at the CIF Central Section final it was freshmen Gaby Gutierrez and Brooklyn Buckley leading the way. The team ran faster on the Woodward Park course at Clovis than it did at the Central Section meet, but the battle for the state title should be fascinating. Defending NXN champion Air Academy isn't as strong as 2023 but still makes the top five after a strong showing in Arizona. Regional champions Flower Mound (South), Union Catholic (Northeast) and Wayzata (Heartland) follow. Midwest teams separated by one point (Downers Grove North IL beat Romeo of Michigan) are side by side at Nos. 9-10. (Romeo underperformed but got through the pressure cooker of the regional meet. The team will be just the second from Michigan to compete at NXN). The Top 30 22. Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran IN More news |
