Right Back At ItPublished by
by Brett Hoover — posted on 12/26/2013 You've hardly gotten a chance to get familiar with your new electronics. You don't know which new piece of apparel should be the first to wear out into public. And the refrigerator is stuffed with yummy leftovers. But for quite a few runners, today isn't just another day to hang around the house and bask in the afterglow of Christmas. In fact, athletes will be toeing the line at The Armory at 10 am today (Thursday) for the North Shore Invitational. And the winner of the elite mile runs will be the first to earn a spot in the fields at the 2014 Millrose Games. (But there is some fineprint.) The boys' Millrose Mile qualifier will go off at 1:10 pm today followed immediately by the girls' qualifier. The acceptances into the 12-person races are: Boys — Tom Meehan (Eastport-South Manor), John Flannery (Bronxville), Ryan Udvadia (Shoreham Wading River), Eliot Kaufman (Xavier), Mike Grady (East Meadow), Leo Potters (Port Washington), Joshua Kotran (Packer Collegiate), Mickey Kozak (Danbury, Conn.), Jordan Price (New Providence), Kenny Hugh (Poly Prep), David Adams (New Providence), Joseph Miller (Seaford). Girls — Marin Warner (Holmdel), Jess Wojnicki (Immaculate), Joelle Feinberg (Port Washington), Denise Branch (Benjamin Cardozo), Lindsey Kane (Washington Township), Grace Moore (Calhoun), Erin Melly (Connetquot), Reilly Seibert (Syosset), Stephanie Gerland (Garden City), Jessica Scheriff (North Babylon), Daniela LoCastro (Cold Spring Harbor), Gianna Tinto (Smithtown West). Then many more athletes are right back at it on Friday with the running of the Marine Corps Holiday Classic, a relay-focused extravaganza which annually takes place between Christmas and the New Year. Races begin at 8:45 am at the Classic, but the primary varsity portion and opening ceremonies won't take place until after noontime. From there it is a mad dash until around 7 pm, with the boys' 4x400m relay capping the day. Just a few of the invitational fields have been released, but the distance medley relays and the 800-meter runs look to be exciting. The top seeds in the boys' DMR are Chaminade, Christian Brothers, St. Peter's Prep, St. Benedict's Prep, Union Catholic and Fordham Prep. The girls' DMR field includes the Ursuline School, Ocean City, Ward Melville, Central Bucks East, Kellenberg Memorial, Kingsway Regional and North Penn. The boys' 800m field includes Thomas Louro (St. Anthony's), Shavanes Robinson (Boys & Girls), Marco Pompilj (Collegiate) and Mohamed Bah (Curtis) while the girls' top runners in the four-lapper are Emma Gallagher (Garden City), Yazmin Wilson-Jones (Port Richmond), Jazmine Fray (Kellenberg) and Sarah Hardie(Elwood).
